Hints & Tips / Pink Cult (Box art competition)
« on: 03 Sep 2018, 10:03 »
I want to try to join *this contest*, but I can´t beat the game :P

Spoiler: ShowHide
I found the pills but I can´t find anything else. Nothing I see is pink or can be used as a bikini substitute. What do I do?

Room transitions in this game are quite tricky (especially in windowed mode), so I could have just missed a location. I´ve been in these three locations:

Spoiler: ShowHide
over the ice, in the hole and in the room with the pills.

Hints & Tips / OROW 9 Hints thread.

I figured I would start a thread like this as I'm stuck in the first game I play :p

In Alien Escapades I simply found myself stuck immediately:
Spoiler: ShowHide
I have the gun of course and the "light source?" also. I found a second image on the monitor but I haveno idea what to do now. Been walking many laps around :p

If the author wants to reply to anything in this thread or the official OROW 9 thread, send me a PM and I'll relay the message to the appropriate thread.

Congratulations Team Party Wagon!

Thank you all for entering and voting, it made my part as the host so much fun to do :)

There was an option to leave a comment when voting, some were messages to me but every comment that were about the games was very positive, often surprised at how great the quality of this OROW was. I can only agree, you guys did a fantastic job.

Let's not wait two more years for the next one

Quote from: old post
OROW 9 is officially underway!
The theme set by previous winner qptain nemo is:

Uncontrollable

Deadline is midnigth GMT between the 30th and 31st of August: http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/to?iso=20150831T02&p0=291&msg=OROW+Deadline&font=cursive&csz=1
I wish you all the best of luck! :)

*********************************************************************

There are a few differences this time, the main one being a theme. More on this below. First some rules that were copy/pasted and adapted from the previous OROW with cat as the host:

***
The OROW competition is a very simple competition were you make a game that is one room big in just one week. This competition has in the past proven what the members of this community are capable of, and it will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Rules:
  • Entries must be made using AGS.
  • Entries should have only one playable room/location. *)
  • Entries may use content from any public source. But be transparent about it (e.g. "Music by Kevin MacLeod from incomptech.com")
  • Entries may have cut scenes, menus or limited controlled sequences outside the main room.
  • Entries must be submitted anonymously, more on that below.
  • There will be a theme announced on midnight GMT between the 23rd and the 24th of August.
  • You may get other people to help you with your game (e.g. music, sounds).
  • No maximum teamsize this time, but bear i mind that it can be tricky to manage a large team

*) This means a room in real-life definition, not an AGS room. So feel free to do close-ups, different views of the same room, scrolling rooms, outdoor scenes,... The main purpose of this rule is to keep it small and simple. Making a game in one week is an enormous task so starting small is a good way to actually finish it in time. We are not too strict about this rule, though.

Anonymous submission
An important aspect in this competition is the anonymity. This means that you cannot share any information about your entry. Nor can your game contain your name. This is because the game should be voted on by its own merits. Please also not include your name in the game info, as this can be seen in the file info.

You submit the game by sending me a link via PM. I will then upload it to another site.

***

The theme:
This is, as mentioned, the biggest difference between this OROW and the prior ones. Just before the competition officially starts a theme will be presented. The main purpose of this is to provide inspiration and perhaps turn this OROW as a competition into something more memorable. You will not be disqualified for not following the theme, just like you won't get disqualified if there is more than one room. However in voting there will be a category for "Best interpretation of the theme" and also a more jokingly one for "Worst abuse of the theme" (thanks Radiant ^^)

Voting
The categories for voting are as follows:
  • Best game,
  • Best concept/script,
  • Best graphics,
  • Best music/sound design,
  • Best scripting,
  • Best interpretation of the theme and
  • Worst abuse of the theme.
Looking for a team? Here's an OROW dating thread: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=52517.0

The OROW starts officially at midnight (GMT) between the 23rd and 24th of August. You should not start making your game until then. Even if you think you have no chance of winning, you're encouraged to enter - it's as much a forum activity as a contest.

Absolutely no information about your game should be shared with anyone until the competition and voting has ended. Please reply to this post if you intend to take part, but don't give any idea of what your game will be about.

Good luck and have fun

Hi! I managed to get stuck in this game, I have no idea what to do:

Spoiler: ShowHide

I have the flute, have played it on the pier, need the musick magick book.
What now? I can't find this book. It seems the monkey might have it? Or is that his leg? I don't know.

EDIT: nvm, found it

EDIT2: Thanks anyway shadow :)

Yesterday was a beautiful day. The summer is here, only a few clouds in the distance. I decided to take a late night stroll up the mountain to watch the sunset. It was so beautiful, and I know that you're not supposed to stare straight into the sun, but I couldn't keep my eyes away.
But what I saw, was no sun at all. It was so bright that I could only make out the shape, but it was terrifying nevertheless. What did I see that night?

The shape I saw:

Rules:
  • You may rotate the outline
  • You may color the edge of the outline (but not outside obviously)
  • You may resize the outline

The competition will end on the 22nd of July and then voting will begin.

Best of luck!

So we were discussing in the "Suggestions for competitions and activities"-thread about the possibility of having an OROW this summer. It's been two years since the last one and it's about time

Voting for dates is now closed and as the topic title implies, this event will take place on August 24th - 30th. Thanks for voting!

Quote from: old text
I'll be hosting it this year, and as I'm sure plenty of people want to join in I thought we could have a poll to try and decide the dates for when it should run. So I set up a strawpoll for just that. I think this summer would be best and it also shouldn't collide with the Background workshop so sometime July/August with 13th of July being the earliest seems a good idea. I set up the poll with that in mind, but please leave suggestions in the comments here if something else sounds better.

Also OROW HYPE!!! :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

Hello everyone! How have you been?

A few months back I started lurking here again and found quite a few games I wanted to try. Oddly enough I couldn't find the motivation to start them up. I realized that I had a hard time just relaxing with a game, and I wanted to feel like I was accomplishing something by playing it.

So I started a "let's play" - channel. I'm not the best at LPing, I mumble a lot and I don't have time to edit much, but it's been real fun so far and I'm looking to improve. I'm going to try uploading a video a day for a while and see how it goes.

If you're interested the channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Bulbapuck/videos

I would love some suggestions on what I should play or comments on how I can improve :)

General Discussion / Chess world championship match
« on: 10 Nov 2013, 16:26 »
So if you didn't know, the world championship match between Viswanathan Anand (current world champion) and Magnus Carlsen (world no 1) is taking place now.

I've been looking forward to this match since the end of the candidates this spring, and so far it hasn't been very exciting, with two quick draws. But there's still 10 more games to go (at least).

Anybody else watching? What do you expect will happen? Carlsen is of course the favorite. But Anand has a lot of experience, is playing in his hometown of Chennai and all around seems to be in good form. I personally think he could put up a good fight.

Completed Game Announcements / Betrayal - OROW 8 entry
« on: 02 Aug 2013, 12:50 »
Betrayal

A man wakes up in an empty room with no way out. The only thing he can see is a key, but what does it unlock?

Made in one week for the "OROW 8" competition.

I've been debating myself whether or not I should post this here considering how small the game is, but I decided to simply because I'm really proud of it. It didn't turn out at all as I intended it to (the ending was my biggest consesion), but that's what happens when you try to make a game in a week.

The game is meant to be a surreal experience with some intriguing puzzle design. It was a lot of fun creating a game like this and I'm thinking about making a full length game in the same style. ^^

Game made by:
Bulbapuck: Most things.
Mathias Niemand: Music.

General Discussion / An explenation of my abscense.
« on: 28 Apr 2013, 22:28 »
When I joined these forums back in 2008 I had just gotten my first internet connection. I was looking for some games in my favorite genre: point and click adventure games. I had been replaying Sanitarium, Grim Fandango and all the Lucasarts titles far too many times and neede something more. As such, finding these forums was a huge thing for me. And as everybody was freindly to me, it kind of actually became my "home" on the internet. I have had many memories here and met many people that I consider to be freinds, even if I haven't met anybody in person.

As such I felt that I needed to explain the fact that I haven't really been around for quite a while. I feel like I owe it to those people.

I've always been of the belief that what makes a man is not the events that happen to him, but how he deals with them. As such, I'm quite ashamed to say that when things went bad in real life, I didn't take it very well. For a long period of time I basically shut the world out. I rarely went to school, rarely hung out with freinds or participated in any social activity at all. Hanging around on forums went from being active to just reading some things to not even visiting. I was miserable, I was an absolute wreck.

But my freinds never gave up on me. They would constantly try to get me out of the rut I was in. They would call, visit, really anything to get me out of my appartment and start living life again. I am very greatful to have those freinds, because it eventually did work.

Back in new years eve 12/13 I got tired of the situation and gave myself my first new years resolution. I told myself that 2013 would be the best year of my life thus far, and I promised myself to fight in order to make that a reality. This resolution is, so far, the best thing I've ever done. I joined a gym, started going regularily, and started eating better. I've changed loads of things about my life in this very short time but eating well and exercising was the biggest improvement. I already feel like myself again and have gotten more memories in 2013 so far then I had in all of 2012. And sure, life is still handing out difficulties to deal with, but I'm finally dealing with it right in stead of just feeling miserable about my life.

So where does that leave my situation with these forums? The answer is that I genuinely don't know. I really did leave the forums and just going back won't happen easily. I find that I still very rarely visit and when I do I very rarely post anything. I still love this place and I hope to one day truly return, but it won't happen overnight.

tl;dr: I left the forums a while back for personal reasons, and don't know if I'll come back for more then a post or two every once in a while.

Apparently, there is an adaptation of the game Shadow of the colossus coming to the big screen. Now I doubt you know this, but this is my favorite game of all time. The concept of the game was amazing, so too the graphical style. It truly is a game that brings out a cavalcade of emotions when playing, and yet it's not overly "artsy". The gameplay is challanging, but not too hard. In my opinion, it's the closest thing to a perfect game I've ever played.

So my opinion on this news is no. NO! Bad Sony >:(

I can't think if a single way for the feelings that the game invoced to be translated to the big screen. The game itself is just: find colossus, kill colossus, repeat 15 times more. How can that be translated? The only way is to go deeper into the story of the protagonist and Mono (the girl), and I personally don't want that. One of the beautiful things about the original game is how little you know of them, all you know is that you're risking your life for her. In fact, you've already left your life behind just to start this quest. That's all you need to know!

Sorry about the slight rant, I just had to speak my mind.

tl;dr: Shadow of the colossus is turned into a movie. What do you guys think about this?

13
My legs were getting tired, every step felt much heavier than the last. But I couldn't stop, not now. I had to keep going. I turned my head and that's when I saw it, but I couldn't believe it. My mind has repressed everything but the shape. What did I see that day?

RULES:
You may not resize the outline.
You may flip or rotate all you please.

Deadline is may 5th, good luck :)

EDIT: The winner shall recieve the running coin as his/her trophy:

General Discussion / Why youtube? Why?
« on: 02 Dec 2011, 18:13 »
I went to youtube today to find that they had switched to a horrible design.

Does anyone know if they're just testing the design? Can you go back to the way it were before?

I don't know why, but I've always loved Irish Folksongs :), so I chose the topic for this round of the tune contest to be:

The Pub

It obviosly doesn't have to be an Irish-y song, whatever way you choose to implement this theme is fine by me :)

Deadline is Sunday the 27th (in a little over two weeks).

Best of luck!

Hourgaming is back :D
Sorry that I'm a bit late with this, but to make up for it I have an idea which might boost entries:

I'm going to follow the great system created by Wyz with a slight modification: I will also have an official event at the IRC channel (like previous hourgames) at 18:00 BST on Saturday the 20th. You can still enter any time you want, but I figure that this might create a couple of more entries :)

Also, since I don't usually work in google docs, please let me know if anything's wrong.

Hello.

So this Saturday is the fifth hoursong competition and I'm taking the "every other week"-thing back.

Hopefully this time interest will be higher, as I won by default the last time (not too great..). But I think that having it on a seperate day from the hourgame might help.

What's an Hoursong competition?
The purpose of Hoursong is to encourage composers and test them under a trial of fire. In this activity your task is to make a song within a strict and very short deadline (i.e. one hour).

When will it take place?
This Hoursong session will take place on Saturday at 18:00 BST. One hour before Hourgame. Participants will have an hour to make their song + 15 minutes to put in finishing touches (maybe mix) / upload.

How do I participate?
A theme is set by the previous hoursong's winner and by the contest's host in event of his/her absence. It will be announced on IRC (3 simple steps to IRC) and here.

Why should I participate?
Because it's FUN!
The more the merrier, and it's great pactice for the ol' music-making skills.

Additional info:
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their songs cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your song from scratch is strongly encouraged. Cover songs will not be accepted. However, participants are allowed to use one (1) element maximum that has been used already by other artists (like a riff). Just don't steal a whole chorus or something like that.
- You cannot use stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.

Camwhoring:
If you have Camtasia or Camtasia-esque software, it would be great to see your "Making of"! Or blog about it, or just open Notepad, do something! No twittering.

Uploading:
Suggested hosts to upload your entry to are:

Recommended:
TerranRich's ShutUpload
Your Newgrounds account
http://www.mediafire.com/
http://www.box.net/

Not recommended:
http://www.sendspace.com/
http://www.rapidshare.com/

Or your own place.

Song formats:
Please use .ogg or .mp3. Given the fact that you must create something pretty fast, MIDI is allowed, but not quite recommended, since the result may vary from listener to listener. If a participant doesn't have time to convert the tune in either ogg or mp3, they are allowed to post it in whatever format they have, just make sure that the format can be played with either Windows Media Player or Winamp. This is to ensure that absolutely anyone can hear the tune.

Voting:
Just tell us your favourite tune. You don't have to enter to vote!
(If you want to tell us what you liked and disliked about all the entries, that would be super nice of you!)
The voting will end when all the entrants have voted, or on Wednesday, whichever comes sooner.
Again, you don't have to enter to vote!

Please post here if you want to participate.

If you can't make it in time an early submission is always welcome. Let me know that you want to do this and I'll send you a PM with the rules.

Hope to see you on saturday.
