Thanks for the crit, guys!  I'll see what I can do about the eyes and scarf.  As for the dynamism, it's a good point, and one I'll have a think about (more as to the extent) :)

This comes from a person who's seen and critiqued probably all of your paintings thus far, so I hope you take it the right way...
To me, it's usually clear when people are trying to hurt or help, and I know you're doing the latter.  Thanks, and no worries! :)

They look pretty good as a starting point :)  To improve them, I think you need to concentrate on giving them some more shape and volume by adding some shading, as well as cleaning them up a bit (removing double pixels, keeping outlining consistent etc.).

As a general comment, I recommend using a canvas that's a more neutral colour, as extremely saturated colours (as well as pure white and pure black) can throw off the perception of a colour.  The colours of the sprites look like they could use some desaturation, but also increased contrast.

I made a quick paintover to hopefully illustrate what I mean.  I kept it very close to your sprite, it just has some extra shading and cleanup, and some parts moved around.

Hello!  It's been a while, hasn't it :)
I was finishing up a painting (my first in a long time), when I decided to do some more extensive corrections on her right hand.  And while I'm at it, I'd like any other suggestions and crit you might have to improve it.  Thanks very much!

I've got some gradient maps and such on, so feel free to comment on the colour levels.  I think it might be slightly too saturated.

It's a bit early to comment to much, but be careful about keeping your curves neat; for example, the curves on the door frame look a bit wobbly, and pixel-style tends to exaggerate things like that.  Keep at it! :)

I like the style, particularly that happy lamppost :D  I think there's too much of a lean to the right with all the elements, though, which is throwing the composition off a bit.  As a quick fix, maybe try flipping that tree.

Aaah, I'm not a big line-tool user, you see ;)  I would still say that Photoshop's still heaps better overall, but that's one disadvantage I didn't know about.

For the record i use photoshop for all my higher res stuff but when it comes to a clean line tool MS Paint always wins.
I've never understood this point of view ;)  Photoshop isn't made specifically for pixels, but turn off the aa and you're good to go.

I'd go with the trusted brand, especially since you can't return it.  I have no personal experience with Genius tablets, but I've heard the pens aren't durable (and they need extra batteries too, according to that production description.  Boooo).  I've used Wacom (although not the Bamboo line) for about a decade, and I've never had a problem with them... plus the pens don't need batteries.

I'm still a relative newcomer to pixelling, but I really enjoy the way it forces me to focus on every detail, as every pixel become increasingly important the smaller you go.  With its limitations, it strips painting and animation to its essentials.  I really think pixelling helped me in hi-res art as well, as it made me pay more attention to what I was doing in general :)

And just a note that if OpenOffice is already open (hee!) when you put the new font in the Font folder, you'll probably have to restart it :)

I agree that the right side looks better.  If you're planning on using black outlines, try using them on the slender birch as well to keep them in the same style :)
