Basically go rape-free for your first game.

Well, what about a bit of bondage or rough sex? It's not exactly rape ... but it's a start.

anything is appropriate as long as you know your target audience ... it can be graphic, it can be nudes, it can be anything ... as long as you know your target audience.

This game is gonna be great! For the record: When I read the title of this game, I realllllly wanted it to be some kind of Leisure Suit Larry type game.

Why not just get a laptop and lug your wacom with you?

Didn't want to pay that much.

What's kind of the problem, it doesn't look finished - lines are still pretty loose and that's especially noticable because the sky (is that the clouds filter in PS?) is filled witzh sharp edges. If it's supposed to be a sunset of 2 suns, shadows should be sharper like at the bottom of the hills and such.
There's also a lack of details in the foreground, or to be more precise they're about the same as on the background.
And the perspective of the cliff is a bit off, especially if you want to scale a sprite on it.
Also the 2 hills in the back sort of seem to repeat.

On a personal note, I don't really like this types of background, almost always the sprites look unnatural and glued on.

Thanks for your comments, I have to say I have to agree with you. I guess my real question is, are there any tips for how I might correct some of the things you mentioned?

No, it's not a PS filter. It's PS brushes.

Was this done with your new android tablet by any chance?

LoL. I started it on the android tablet, but "finished" it on the pc with my wacom tablet.

K, as I've mentioned before, I've just been getting back into digital painting recently, but mostly working on portraits.  I thought I'd take a stab at a landscape for the BG blitz contest.

This was my entry:

It's got a lot of work that needs to be done, I know.  I think for a first real attempt at a background, it's not terrible.  I'd like for suggestions on how I could improve future backgrounds/landscapes.

I'm not much of a background artist ... but here's my try.

In almost 2012 there's no matter. Resources are not a question at all, especially for an AGS game since lousiest of flash drives (1-2GB or so) can easily carry a full game and nobody uses 56K modem anymore.

but to make it clear:

8-bit = 256 colors
-- outdated, but ok for sprite art. I wouldn't limit myself to this palette though.

16-bit = 65,536 colors
-- all you need. Although, If you're heavy gradient user or as said - digital painter, move forward

32-bit = 16,777,216  colors
-- Human eye recognizes around 10 million (impossible to really determine, but popular opinion says so), so it's an overkill. Gradients are smoother though

48-bit = 281.5 trillion colors.
-- yep, we went there and even 64-bit. Not sure why. Cool to know though

Thanks. You guys have been helpful.

I'm sitting outside of BestBuy right now in line. They have a black friday deal for the asus transformer for $249. Another 4hrs 20 mins before their midnight opening. But there is no guarantee I'll even get one. The line is pretty long ahead of me. Wish me luck.

Yes, you can. As far as Ipad, I am not too sure of which drawing tools they have, but in both cases, you can VNC (remote desktop) to your pc using something like and draw using whatever tools you use on your desktop.

I however do use an android tablet. They are very convenient and have many drawing apps as well as some adobe products. I also use a specialized stylus which works on those types of screens and makes drawing/sketching/writing a whole lot easier. You can also download an amiga emulator or dosbox for either system and use Deluxe paint for it. I think an android tablet (or ipad) is a better investment than a drawing tablet personally.

I personally use an ASUS Transformer. If you wait until December, a new, better version of it called the Transformer Prime will be released for the same price as the current Transformer, only a lot thinner, more powerful, etc...

Can you get apps that allow the same kind of tools as photoshop, such as smudge, layers, different brushes, import brushes, brush settings, etc?

What kind of stylus do you use?

Okay guys, I've been doing a lot more painting with my Wacom tablet lately. And it's awesome, however, I'd like to be able to take my work on the road. Can you use an Ipad/other tablet device for digital painting? Does it have appropriate apps for this? Can is the screen touch sensitive (in - at least - a similar way the wacom tablet is)?

I know they make laptops where you can flip the screen around and draw on it but I'm not really looking to spend $700-$900 ... especially if I can achieve similar things with a tablet and pay less.

Any info on this guys?

8 bit vs 16 bit vs 32 bit? These are the color mode options in Photoshop. I think I vaguely understand the difference between the 3, but when it comes to digital painting in photoshop, how do you determine which one to use?

(but on the inside, be wary, and check out the man)

is there a universal "i am not a thread" gesture?
